Keep Cut Flowers Fresh for Arrangements

Flower arranging is an art form in itself, some complex designs can be achieved and, for the most experienced practitioners, designs and pictures can be created. Some of the best flower arrangers can create quite beautiful images or even pet portraits!

However, whatever you set out to do, even if it’s just a humble display for the living room, you’ll want your flowers to stay as fresh for as long as possible.

There are a few techniques you can use to extend the life of the flowers in the vase. First of all, if you’re cutting your own from the garden, do it in the early morning, as exposure to sun will dry the flower heads out quickly. Similarly, if you’re buying your flowers, avoid the ones that have been on display in direct sunlight. Any source of heat will accelerate the rate at which the flowers will wilt, so do not place your arrangements near radiators, the TV, or a window in direct sun.

Glass vessels are not good, as light can cause bacterial decay. Keeping water fresh is also key, to help keep it fresh, add half a teaspoon of bleach to a pint of water. You also do not need to worry about specialist plant foods, all you need to do is add a teaspoon of sugar for every pint of water
